What is a Razor burn?

When you feel an irritating sensation after shaving with a razor, it is called a Razor burn. Razor burns is caused either unknowingly affecting sensitive areas on the skin or failure of the razor user to use adequate techniques of shaving. Ordinarily razor burns appear as mild rash and disappear after a short period ranging from a few hours to a few days.

However, a severe razor burn may also result in razor bumps creating a good amount of infections to the affected part of the skin. A razor burn is a recurring problem with people having coarse hair on sensitive skin areas like underarms, beard and chest.

Causes of Razor burns

A razor burn can occur due to multiple reasons like you might be shaving with a blade that has lost its edge or you have been shaving without a cream or soap layer. Sometimes too much pressure on skin while shaving or shaving in a hurry can cause such razor burn. But the most common factor causing a razor burn is shaving against the grain.

Keeping the skin to be shaved moist with a shaving cream and brush is a process that should be applied before shaving. Use of a good aftershave lotion, cream or gel after shaving is an essential preventive to possible razor burns. Apart from this a few precautionary measures like not using too much pressure, not scratching irritating skin after shaving, to clean the razor properly will also help. But the most important factor always remains the use of a good aftershave cream that has alcohol and aloe vera, which is a medicinal plant used to prevent skin infections, contents.

How to heal a Razor burn that has already appeared

To treat a Razor burn effectively you may use several items like witch hazel or mild salicyclic acid solutions. Even use of cold water may get you some relief. But the best practice is to apply a gel or a cream having aloe vera content. It will really smoothen and soften your skin and the burning affects will soon disappear. Especially, use of such lotion or gel on dry patches on the skin will be very effective. There are certain aftershaves those are specially designed to prevent or heal Razor burns.

Use of aftershave to prevent and heal Razor burns

While methodically it would be best to have your shaving after you take your bath and the skin is moist and soft with water and steam, it may not be to our liking since most of us like to take our bath after shaving. Therefore, you can take the alternative of lathering a shaving cream or gel on the skin to be shaved before shaving. Wash the skin area with cold water and apply the aftershave lotion about thirty minutes after finishing the shower. To treat the existing Razor burns, you may use pure Aloe Vera gel that not only soothes your hurting skin but also sets up a preventive barrier against future Razor burns.
